A significant
feature of recently concluded assembly elections in different Indian states was
the humiliating defeat of two prominent regional outfits – the DMK and the
Trinamul Congress. While the former was based in southern Indian state of Tamil
Nadu, the latter was based in West Bengal in the east. Both were ruling their
respective states since long.
The DMK and the
Trinamul joined the long list of regional parties in India who had lost the
assembly elections in different states in the recent past. Last year, two other
important regional outfits, the Aam Admi Party(AAP) and RJD(Rashtriya Janata
Dal) had received drubbings in Delhi and Bihar respectively.
In 2024, Biju
Janata Dal(BJD)’s two decade long rule had come to an end in eastern India
state of Odisha. Similarly, in Uttar
Pradesh(UP), the most politically important state in the country, two regional
outfits, the Samajwadi Party(SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) have remained out
of power in the state since long, repeatedly testing defeats in assembly polls.
In Maharashtra,
erstwhile ruling regional party Shiv Sena had a stunning defeat in the last
assembly elections held in the western India state. Their repeated defeats in
the assembly polls have already put a question mark on the survival of these
regional political outfits with a section of the political observers expressing
apprehension that the endgame seems to be on the cards for these parties.
According to
analysts, the emergence of Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) as a much stronger
party, both at the national level as well as in different states is one of the
prime reasons behind the decay in the popularity of the regional
outfits. Significantly, majority of these regional parties have been crushed in
the electoral battlefield by the BJP.
The fall in the
influence of the regional parties is also being linked to the fast depleting strength
of the Congress, the principal opposition party in the country. Majority of the
regional parties have been siding with the Congress to improve their position.
The association is known as Indi alliance.
Nevertheless,
there is also a section of political observers who feel that it is too early to
write the obituary of the regional outfits. According to them, it is a fact
that the established regional parties are no more shining like before. But they
are being replaced by newer players who are doing pretty well. A case in point
is Tamil Nadu. In the southern Indian state, one regional outfit has been
replaced by another comparatively newly floated one to rule the state.
