Rape punishment: only death
sentence not enough

By S T Beuria

Recently lower courts in several Indian states have pronounced death punishment for criminals involved in rape and murder of minor girls. In eastern state of Odisha alone four such pronouncements have been made in a short span of four months. This nevertheless would not perhaps help in controlling the heinous and inhuman crime, particularly in a country where majority of the population, if not all, are individuals with criminal mind set. To control such anti-humanity and anti-society crime, one requires to come out with some out-of-the-box steps which is the need of the hour.

The Central government, the states and the Supreme Court should come together to work out a mechanism through which the rape victims can get justice within a short span of six months. Which means the investigation, trial and pronouncements as well as execution of death sentences should be over in 24 weeks. Special courts and designated judges can be appointed for this purpose. These steps can only create a fear factor among the criminals indulging in extra serious crimes like rape. The problem in India is that nobody fears the laws of the land for their loopholes as well as improper and late execution. This attitude has to be changed by any means.

Moreover, not only the cases of rapes of minors but for all types of rapes, be it minor and major girls and ladies or minor and major boys(there is no dearth of rapists of boys across the globe, particularly in south Asian countries including India), the penalty should be death. Everybody should remember that when one forces upon somebody for a physical relationship, he or she gets murdered not once but ten and hundred times over. The scar and scare remain for rest of his or her life. The late Roger Moore, the Hollywood star famous for his role as James Bond in popular bond movies once had revealed while speaking at a function as to how he was sexually assaulted in his childhood and how the episode haunted him for rest of his life.

The out of box initiatives should also include punishment, either monetarily or through jail terms, for parents of the perpetrators for their failure to bring up their children properly. No person would indulge in a crime like rape if he is parented and brought up in a proper manner. All should realize that it is very easy to produce a child. Dogs are also giving birth to puppies on the streets. But it a responsible job to bring up a child. If you do not have the capability to give a proper childhood to your children then don’t go for them.
