Signatures of super
bad times

By S T Beuria

Eastern India state of Odisha received very heavy rainfall under the impact of an ugly weather system in the Bay of Bengal on second half of September. It was, in fact, still raining cat and dog in many parts of the state including capital Bhubaneswar at the time of writing this piece. The downpour came as a big surprise to many as this type of weather conditions are rarely seen in the month of September.

Not only Odisha, several parts of India received unprecedented rainfall this monsoon killing people, destroying properties, both government as well as private, besides making life miserable for those who survived. These are signatures of not bad but super bad times.

Now the question is why and how this super bad time arrived? To examine this query one feels like to recount a story appeared in a section of the media sometime back. There was an island in Caribbean region(cricket buffs must be accustomed with the term West Indies which consists of different island nations in the region which is close to USA).

The small island was discovered by sailors and merchants of some developed nations while passing through the sea for maritime trade centuries back. Gradually people started settling in the empty island which progressed and prospered as a major trading centre. This brought in huge financial benefits to the people residing in the island.

Unfortunately, the island’s glory did not last for long. If not all but majority of the people(in the island) started indulging in all kinds of unlawful and criminal activities. So much so that even pirates and smugglers became elected rulers of the prosperous island. Merchants and sailors feared to pass through and step into it. There was nobody to control the situation.

One perfect stormy night, huge waves marched in from the nearby sea and engulfed the entire island including its people and properties. The island still remains under water.

The morale of the story is when the number of sins and sinners goes up beyond the red line at a particular place, the nature steps in to take control of the situation. And that exactly perhaps what is happening in India, the entire south Asia region for that matter. Every single day one hears and reads in newspaper and TV channels about brutal rape(many a time gang rape and murder) of innocent girls and ladies including minors in some parts of India. Rarely one would find a zero corruption office, both in private and public sector, in any corner of the country. Seldom one comes across a politician(read ruler) with absolute honesty and integrity.

One would not find a single city or rural and urban centre in India where common people are not breaking traffic rules so brazenly, blatantly and shamelessly(those who break the traffic laws are people with same criminal mind set that of crooks, thieves, murderers, rapists and perpetrators of other crimes like corruption).

So, now it remains to be seen which part of India, or south Asia, gets consumed by the sea(or rain water) first.
