India needs "equalizers" not police to
to handle hard core criminals and crimes

By S T Beuria

The citizens in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar were utterly disturbed a few days back after watching a horrifying and heart breaking crime on a city street in local TV news channels. The crime was caught on a CCTV camera.

A woman was going in her two wheeler when two criminals came from the back in a motorbike, snatched the necklace from her and biked their way speedily. Caught unaware and surprised by the turn of event, the lady falls from her two wheeler under the impact. She gets up after a few seconds but had to hold her waist in pain raising an alarm at the same time. A man walking near the crime scene also raised an alarm but in vain. The two bike borne criminals managed to flee from the spot in seconds.

Such incidents occur across the country many a times every single day. Some would call these incidents as petty crimes. They are not. They leave a psychologically wrecking lasting impact on the victims’ mind for months, even for years together. The incidents also endanger human lives. There are millions of cases in different parts of the country of people getting killed while falling on the road under the impact of a chain snatching attempt.

What also disturbs many is the subsequent developments after every such incident. The local police would swung into action and catch the criminals. They would be sent to jail but only for a few days or months. They would get bail and come out of prison only to commit the similar crimes again and again endangering people’s lives and disturbing their peace of mind.

Then what is the solution? The only way the problem can be handled is the state governments should raise a small force of “equalizers” and deploy them in different districts and principal cities and urban centres of their respective states.

Now who is an “equalizer” and what he does? He is an individual who helps common citizens to have believe in themselves that they are no way inferior compared to criminals of all kinds and sizes. Rather they are superior to them(the criminals). Similarly he often teaches the criminals that they are no way superior than the common citizens. They are, in fact, inferior to them(the men and women on the streets).

A militarily trained person, he often attacks criminals and sends them to hospitals. Many a time he also “terminates”(read eliminates) the hard core criminals where and when necessary. He firmly believes that police, law, courts etc are there for wrongdoers among the human beings. But for hard core criminals who are actually devils and demons in the mask of human beings deserve termination or elimination.

If not fully the role of an equalizer is substantially displayed on celluloid in two Hollywood movies – “The Equalizer” and “The Equalizer 2”. In both the movies which were super hits at the box office, the main character was played by Denzel Washington, one of the favourites actors of millions of Hollywood movie watchers across the globe.

In this pandemic period when people get plenty of leisure time because of lockdowns and shutdowns, it is advised to download both the movies from the internet and watch them. “The Equalizer 2” is a must see.
